Overview of JOM

The White Mountain Apache ribe Johnson O'Malley (JOM) Program is a grant funded program created in the 1970's under teh Indian Self Determinization Act of 1934 to provide supplemental services to meet the unique specialized needs of Indian children attending public schools on or near the Fort Apache Indian Reservation

Needs in the following area of envirnoments:

SOCIAL                  ECONOMIC                  CULTURAL

Known more commonly as the "summer work" program for our Apache children in the past, nowadays, JOM works directly with the public schools on or near the reservation in providing various supplemental services tailored to the educational needs of Native Americans on or near the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. Types of education services include, but are not limited to: incentives, parent involvement, classromm supplies, academic enrichment, etc.


JOM Services


The White Mountain Apache Tribe JOM Program provides services in two areas:

The WMAT JOM Program works directly with students from age 3 years through grade 12 in the public schools and is presently providing supplemental services to:

1. Alchesay High School

2. Canyon Day Junior High

3. Seven Mile Elementary

4. Whiteriver Elementary

5. Cradleboard Elementary

6. Blue Ridge High School

7. McNary School

8. WMAT Head Start Program

9. WMAT Boys and Girls Club


The Education Plan

The Education Plan is the manual which outlines the educational programs appreved by the Indian Education Committee. This plan contains the educational goals and objectives which address teh educational needs of the Indian Students.
In order for the public schools to get supplemental assistance from the JOM Program, the type of assistance requested must be written in the Educational Plan and approved by the Indian Education Committee.



The Indian Education Committee

The Indian Education Committee consists of members appointed by the White Mountain Apache Tribal Council to participate fully in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of all JOM programs, including both supplemental and operational support.
The Committee serves as the primary sommittee of the Tribal Education Department and is involved un all aspects of the Tribal Education Programs, which include JOM, Adult Education, High Education, and Vocational Rehabilitation.

Children's First Coalition

A group of school staff, administrators, local programs, departments, and community members, who gather once a month to focus on areas that benefit all children in the area education (social, cultural and physical aspects).
